Fundamental British Values

At Rockwood Nursery School use the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) curriculum to support the children's development and understanding to promote the Fundamental British values of:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

The nursery school is situated on edge of the Burnley Wood area of Burnley and as such provides early education for children from a range of different cultural and religious background, but primarily children from a white british. As such, we endeavour to support all children to value the cultural diversity that surrounds them and prepare them for their future in a multi-cultural society. We follow the guidance here:

As a school we will actively promote fundamental British Values through:

  • Democracy

Supporting children and families to treat everyone equally and having equal rights. Children are taught that their opinions are important and that everyone's thoughts and feelings should be listened to and valued. We allow children to make their own choices throughout their sessions to allow them the power to choose and will make decisions on their own and in groups. This might include choosing a story to share, directing their own learning, learning to take turns and becoming aware of their own and others' emotions and feelings.

  • The Rule of Law

We consistently reinforce our high expectations of children. Children are taught the value and the reasons behind our expectations (rules): that they are there to protect us, that everyone has responsibilities and that there are consequences when rules are broken. Children form the rules with the staff following discussion so they are aware of why they are there and what the expectations are. This is our, Rule of Law. Our school Behaviour Policy supports these values.

  • Individual Liberty

Within school, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate, and provide boundaries for young children so that they can make choices safely through provision of a safe enabling environment and effective teaching allowing children to understand and value their own self and to gain confidence in making choices. Our PSED curriculum underpins this development of promoting their self-esteem, self-confidence and self-awareness.

  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

We encourage our children to respect others. Through their activities and learning, children are encouraged to treat other people as they would like to be treated. Children learn to understand and appreciate each other’s differences, without allowing those differences to cause a change in the treatment of any sort. We encourage them to share and care for each other. Respectful nteractions are demonstrated to children by the way the staff speak with each other, the families and the children. Children are encouraged to explore how their behaviour and words impact on others. Rockwood values the community it is situated in and the environment is set up to be inclusive, respectful and value faiths, cultures and races. We celebrate other festivals and believes relevant to the children and the communities around us through the year.
